Changes happen around us every day. There are all sorts of ways that thing change. During this mission, you will mix different things together too see what types of changes will happen. Sometimes mixing things can make new and interesting things!
During this mission, you will be mixing together some food items from your kitchen. This is a chance for you to create a tasty mixture of things that you can eat! However, not all mixtures are edible, even if they are from you kitchen, so do not eat them unless your science buddy says it is OK to eat. It is very important to follow this rule whenever you are mixing up things from your kitchen!
This mission is to make a Purple Cow.
That's right - I said a Purple Cow.
This is not a funny kind of animal, it is a special type of drink! You will change an ordinary glass of milk, into a drink called a Purple Cow! You will make a special kind of mixture called a solution and, I hope, you will try it! (Remember, only do this if your Science Buddy says it is OK.)
Have your Science Buddy help you gather the materials together for your mission.
What you need:
What's Next?
You can try to experiment by mixing other drinks to see how they taste.
If a Science Buddy has a blender, you can mix fruits and juices together. Add chunks of banana or strawberry to 1 cup of milk in a blender. Make sure to get permission from your Science Buddy for any combinations and to make sure you are not allergic to anything you are mixing together.

What you need:
- milk (If you cannot or do not drink cow's milk, you could try this with soy milk, almond milk, or any other type of "milk" you may use. The drink is called Purple Cow because cow's milk was used.)
- grape juice
- 2 drinking glasses
- measuring cups
- stirring spoon or straw
- Pour out a little of each substance into one of the drinking glasses. Record observations about each of the different substances - milk and grape juice. Write these observations on the "What Happened" side of your Mission Report. Here are a few questions to guide your observations. What physical state are these substances in? Solid, Liquid, or Gas? What do they look like? What color are they? Are they thick or thin? Do they flow quickly or slowly? How does it smell? How does it taste? (Remember your ask your Science Buddy before tasting anything!)
- Make a prediction. What will happen if you mix the two liquids together? Under your observations, label and write your prediction.
- Next, we will make a mixture. A mixture is when we put two or more things together and stir them up. Pour 2/3 of a cup of milk and 1/3 of a cup of grape juice into one of the drinking glasses. Observe what happens.
- Stir your new solution. A solution is a mixture of two liquids when you cannot tell the two parts of the mixture apart.
- Taste your new drink! On your mission report, record how the milk and grape juice have changed. How does the mixture taste? How does the mixture look? Which drink do you like best - milk, grape juice, or the combination?
What's Next?
You can try to experiment by mixing other drinks to see how they taste.
- Try this combination with a grape soda instead of grape juice. Does it taste the same? Does it mix together in the same way?
- Try mixing grape soda with ice cream to make an Icy Purple Cow.
- What would you mix to make an Orange Cow or a Brown Cow?
- What happens if you add fruit juice or milk to a carbonated soda or carbonated water?
